Ludhiana: In Ludhiana, the Mercedes capital of India, gleaming Mercs are prize possessions. And one of the showrooms on the highway has to replenish its stock almost every week.
The boomtown of Ludhiana now has a very prosperous class who are not yet tired of owning Mercedes Benz and voting.
However, what they are certainly tired of is bad governance.
“There is garbage, dirt, and encroachment everywhere,” says a resident of Ludhiana and President, Focal Point Industries, Rajneesh Ahuja.
Another resident, Renu Singh adds, ”We want a clean government. But this last government has not done anything.”
With affluence comes impatience. So on Feburary13, the residents say they will vote for a change.
In a city where 24 malls are under construction and where new swanky homes are coming up in hundreds, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is playing on this dissatisfaction.
“The last government has done nothing for the last five years,” says a SAD candidate for Ludhiana West, Harish Rai Dhanda.
But the Congress has understood they need to come up with an attractive promise. So, the Public Health Minister who is seeking re-election insists they will look at easing the traffic in the city.
“We shall have the Metro in the city,” says Congress Candidate for Ludhiana West, Harnam Das Johar.
But the upwardly mobile people of Ludhiana, who are restless about their politics, know that they must change their government after every five years.
