Mercedes is known to be a pioneer as far as automobile technology is concerned; however, the company is now going a step further by introducing Beltbag airbag for rear seat passengers.
The Beltbag airbag is an inflatable seat-belt strap which claims to reduce the risk of injury to passengers in the rear in a head-on collision by lessening the strain placed on the ribcage.
If the crash sensors detect a frontal impact, the Beltbag which has a gas generator, will be deployed by the airbag control unit. The resulting larger surface area is able to better distribute the force acting on the seat occupant, thereby reducing the risk of injury.

The Beltbag will probably make its debut in the new S-Class scheduled to be launched in North America next year.
