New Delhi: A recent report by the Central Road Research Institute says that almost 33,000 tonnes of fuel was saved between 2002 and 2006 — all thanks to the Delhi Metro which is not just cheap, convenient, fast, but environment friendly as well.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) also helped prevent the emission of over 2,275 tonnes of hydrocarbons in the past four years.

“It's cheap, convenient, fast and air conditioned,” says a Metro traveler.

And by the end of 2007, with more people using the Metro, 57,858 tonnes of petrol, diesel and CNG are expected to be saved. Till 2006, the Metro has taken the share of 22,697 vehicles onto its system.

This also means that almost 16.6 lakh vehicle kilometres will be saved by 2007 end. And not only that we would've saved 218 crore rupees set aside for maintenance.

“It runs on electricity and so it is a environment friendly way of communicating,” says CRRI Director, P K Nanda.

The report also says that Delhiites would save Rs 129 crore in terms of fuel consumption by the end of 2007, which shows that the Delhi Metro has done its bit for the environment.
