'Sreedharan key to completing Metro project'

New Delhi: The Delhi government has rejected Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan. But many who know him closely say the man who has held and impeccable record is unlikely to take back his resignation.

As a young engineer Sreedharan participated in India's first metro project the Kolkota Metro. At the verge of retirement, he took up the challenge of taking the trains through the Western Ghats - the Konkan Railways in record seven years.

E Sreedharan could achieve what the British thought was impossible and then the Delhi Metro happened.

Sreedharan while heading a Public Sector Entreprise - Delhi Metro Rail Corporation - inculcated the temperament of the private sector.

"Well my total salary after the taxes would be about only Rs 30,000," he had said earlier.

Wading through political pressure, he could complete the first phase nine months ahead of schedule. With a reverse clock in his office, he kept everyone on their toes.

His next deadline was to spread the Metro net across the length and breath of the Capital before the Commonwealth Games.

Earlier in 2008, there was another mishap at Laxmi Nagar where the first major incident took place. Since work on DMRC began on Sunday when E Sreedharan was planning for a quiet birthday - his 77th - there another accident at the Metro Site in South Delhi, within hours, E Sreedharan resigned taking moral responsibility.

"Having taken this moral responsibility I have decided to resign as the Managing Director Delhi Metro Rail Corporation," he said.
