People's faith in DMRC see-saws

New Delhi: Recent accidents as Delhi Metro progresses with work, fears abound in the minds of the commuters who pass by the Metro's mammoth construction work everyday.

Collapsing bridges and cracking structures have put questions over the Delhi Metro's safety standards.

Delhiites prefer staying away from most construction sites.

"I do not feel comfortable driving on this route anymore. I also tell others to avoid travelling on this road as it is too scary a prospect. You see, all over there are steel girders, people working on them. You never know when things can fall on you from anywhere," said Virendra Gupta, a resident who stays only two blocks away from the site of the latest Metro accident. Gupta travels in his car but is wary of the mammoth structures as he passes by them.

Falling girders, toppling cranes, collapsing slabs -with several accidents being reported from metro construction sites, commuters are now being extra cautious.

But if you're on foot, there's perhaps even more reason to be scared, feel some.

"I suddenly looked up at the Metro (elevated section path) and saw that crack on the slab there," said a college student who studies in the vicinity.

"Suddenly, that pillar may fall upon us and college life is all over, right here, right now," said another student.

Another student said her parents wanted to ensure their child was safe in the face of so many Metro mishaps.

"My parents were panicking a lot and they asked me to take the back-gate just so as to avoid the front gate," said the student.

But for some, their faith in the DMRC remains unshaken, especially since MD of DMRC, E Sreedharan is at the helm of affairs. Sreedharan's clean track record makes many repose their faith in the Delhi Metro project again even in the face of others' dwindling confidence in DMRC.

"Sometimes, when working on such a large scale, accidents do happen. I totally Sreedharan," said a student, practically.

The Delhi Metro's image has taken a beating but many hope it can lift itself out of the mess.
