New Delhi: US First Lady Michelle Obama, a style icon in her own right, left her own mark during the Obama visit. She has even been voted one of the best dressed women by Vogue and Vanity Fair.
She was lauded by fashion czars for bringing chic back when she took over as the US First Lady. But for her Indian trip -- Michelle Obama ditched her elegantly cut and brightly coloured dresses for some rather conservative styles and shades.
On Saturday, she touched down in Mumbai wearing a muted grey buttoned tunic; accessorised it with a triple-strand pearl choker necklace and silver kitten heels. UK's 'Daily Mail' termed her attire as 'a neat reference to a traditional Indian kurti."
Michelle, who is otherwise known for cleverly combining designer labels with popular brands, didn't quite strike the right balance when she slipped into a J Crew Olive green tee and a floral skirt to play hopscotch with some students.
But on day two, she looked every bit the first lady that she is in a black and white dress and a pink cardigan. She even joined children of Mumbai's Holy Name High School for a quick dance.
The Delhi leg of her tour was kickstarted with some colour. She wore a turquoise blue ensemble for a visit to the Humayun's tomb. While the colour was spot on, the cut left much to be desired.
It was a classic but staid black trousers and a richly embroidered jacket with a Ranjana Khan necklace for the Presidential dinner in the evening. The toned down look was a far cry from her very fashionable and very stately champagne coloured Naeem Khan gown that she wore for the state dinner during Manmohan Singh's visit to the US.
The US First Lady continued the subdued look on day three as well. But a black and green dress for a visit to the National Handicrafts and Handloom Museum did not match Mrs O's flambouyance or her style that first won her nods by fashion czars.
If there is anything like fashion diplomacy, then Michelle Obama certainly played it safe on her visit to India.
