New Delhi: Militants carried out a suicide attack on a CRPF battalion headquarters housed in a hotel at Boulvard along the banks of the famous Dal lake in Srinagar on Thursday evening.
Latest reports say the Army has shot dead two suspected militants involved in the attack. Three jawans were injured and one militant killed in the gunbattle between militants and CRPF jawans.
The attack on the CRPF camp took place at a time when the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was hosting an Iftaar party at nearby Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).
Militants hurled grenade and followed it by firing on the sentry post at the main gate of the headquarters of 144th battalion triggering a gunfight.
“We had alerted the security agencies about escalation in violence five days back. We had reports from across the border that anti-social elements would try to incite violence before Eid,” the IB sources told CNN-IBN.
After the incident, the whole area was immediately cordoned off and efforts are on to neutralise the militants, whose number was not known immediately.
The sources said it was not immediately known whether the militants had managed to gain entry into the camp or were barred by the jawans from entering into their headquarters.
