Guwahati: Cadres of the United Liberation Front of Barak Valley (ULFBV) laid down their arms before Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at a surrender ceremony in Guwahati.
It is believed that all 305 members of the militant outfit have given up their armed struggle in hope of a better future.
President of ULFBV Pancharam Apeto said, “We have been promised that our demands will be fulfilled and for this we have come forward. We cannot waste our lives. The government has promised our demands will be looked into.”
ULFBV was formed in 2001 and have been waging an armed struggle for the upliftment of the Reangs, particularly in the Haliakandi and Karimganj districts.
Their demands are simple:
Far removed from the surrender ceremony and the promise of a better life, in Barak Valley what prevails is a sense of underdevelopment and discrimination in tribal-dominated areas.
The Reang tribes are often harassed as illegal settlers. The most basic of facilities are also absent in their villages.
"We want education, employment, schools and development for our villages," a local resident said.
For ULFBV it is a leap of faith and an assurance that their problems will be looked into. Hopefully, it will be a surrender that will spread the message of both development and peace for the Reang tribes in Barak Valley.
