Mining scam: Srilakshmi to be produced in court

Hyderabad: Y Srilakshmi, the IAS officer arrested for allegedly giving undue favours to mining baron and former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhana Reddy, will be produced in court on Thursday.

Senior IAS officer Srilakshmi on Wednesday sent to judicial custody till December 12 after her arrest by the CBI in the illegal mining scam.

While Srilakshmi is the first IAS officer to have been arrested in the scam, several other senior bureaucrats have come under the CBI scanner. The grilling of senior bureaucrats MVGK Bhanu and M Samuel, who served under the late chief minister YSR Reddy, has got the state IAS officers association concerned.

The association president, S Bhale Rao said, "We will not protect anyone from our fraternity who is involved in wrongdoing for they must face consequences, but if fair IAS officers are increasingly becoming scapegoats, then we are concerned."

While the bureaucrats issue the government orders, IAS officers are lament that the name of the minister is not usually mentioned on the orders in Andhra Pradesh, making the bureaucrats directly liable for the decision as in the case of Srilakshmi. The greater worry for them is - will the ministers go scott-free then?

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy says IAS officers have a full right to not be party to any illegal decision.

The IAS Officers Association is now demanding that henceforth the name of the minister and the file notings be written with greater care to increase transparency.
