Jaipur: Rajasthan's state education minister Vasudev Devnani is in the news yet again. However, this time the RSS face in the Vasundhara Raje’s Cabinet isn’t in the news for his ideological doggedness, but for a more personal reason.

The allegation is that the Devnani misused his office to change his son's admission in Udaipur's College of Technology and Engineering. He allegedly lobbied with the college authorities to convert a paid seat to a free one, and also took back a fee of Rs 70,000 paid to the university since 2002-03. After the Chief Auditor General sought an explanation, the Dean is now promising a probe.

“We will write to them that this much is due and has to be deposited,” said College of Technology and Engineering, Dean Virendra Shrivastava.

However the minister says the onus of explanation lies with the university.

“I'm telling you that Rs 1.5 lakh is the total fee. In the first year it was Rs 53,000 and Rs 18,000 each following year, you deduct it from the amount. The University will give explanations to the Auditor General not me,” said Devnani.

Vice Chancellor of the varsity S L Mehta was the one to pass the alleged orders, which resulted in a financial loss of Rs 1.5 lakh. He is now shying away from media

Meanwhile, the students are angry at the blatant discrimination.

“If only our fathers were ministers we wouldn't have to study on a paid seat,” said an irate student, Nitesh Rajoriya.

Devnani was in the news just two weeks back, also for allegedly misusing his office to favour his daughter. As against the usual four to six months it takes for re-evaluation of exam papers, his daughter got the results after re-evaluation of two papers for her MBA course in just 25 days. The Opposition is now demanding that Devnani should step down on moral grounds.
