Why PM doesn't want Raja, Baalu

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The word is that the Congress was opposed to T R Baalu and A Raja being part of the Cabinet. But who are these politicians that Manmohan doesn’t want in his Cabinet?

DMK leader TR Baalu, who announced that the party would extend outside support to the Government, was the Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping in the last government.

Congress has reservations about giving the 68 year old leader ministries in the new government. He was seen as many as a reason for the slowdown in the highway programme, and for turning the NHAI into a contracting agency.

The big low point for Baalu was when truckers went on strike twice within six months in July 2008 and January 2009.

Baalu courted controversy when he admitted that he had sought gas allocation for a company owned by his son, in response to an allegation made by AIADMK.

A Raja was the Minister of Communications and IT in the last government. He took over in mid 2007 when party colleague Dayanidhi Maran fell out with Karunanidhi.

Raja got into a controversy over spectrum allocation. He was accused of giving away spectrum at throwaway prices, estimated to have caused a Rs. 60,000-crore loss to the exchequer.
