Balasore: The nation feels proud every time a successful missile test is conducted from Chandipur in Balasore district.

But 2,874 villagers living near the site who have to move to safety during such tests now say they need permanent rehabilitation measures but officials say their permanent rehabilitation is difficult.

"We are forced to leave our house for safety sake but pregnant woman and old people cannot leave. Why does not the Government give us permanent place to live instead of shifting us regularly?" said an affected local resident, Budhiram Singh.

The Defence department pays a compensation of Rs 120 per day for each adult and Rs 60 per minor, in addition to providing Rs 25 for locks to be put in each house and Rs 10 for cattle feed when it shifts the people to camps near Chandipur.

"If there is a permanent rehabilitation then it will cost huge amount to the Defense and that is why we have to make these temporary arrangements," says the Collector of Balasore, Alekha Chandra Parihari.

Residents in a two and a half km radius around the test range dispute this saying a Government that spends crores of rupees on missile tests should not have problems in permanently and properly rehabilitating them.
