Missing Guj riot victims declared dead

Ahemdabad: Seven years since the communal riots in Gujarat, the survivors have gathered at the Gulbarg Society to pay homage to the more than 1000 people who perished.

Among them the Parzania parent Rupa Mody whose son Azhar went missing during the riots.

"There is still an atmosphere of fear. We don't feel safe. Just yesterday, we were prevented form, going to Godhra,” Gulbarg Survivor, Rupa Mody.

On Saturday all those reported missing in the riots more than 200 in number were officially declared dead by the government.

For their relatives the pain is still fresh

"We're not getting justice. It has been seven years now. Even the SIT is under pressure not to arrest people," Naroda Gaam Survivor, Younis Qureshi.

But many others like Tanvir Jaffri son of murdered Congress ex-Mp Ehsaan Jaffri are still hopeful. They see the recent arrests by the Special Investigation Team signal that justice would be done.

"The SIT is doing a good job. If it can arrest a DSP, then there were others above him, below him who were also responsible," says Son of Ehsaan Jaffri, Tanvir Jaffri.

Human rights activists renew their pledge to fight till all those behind the riots are booked.

"That's what we are fighting for so that the perpetrators and conspirators be brought to justice.. Our hope is that the perpetrators at the highest level are punished," says Secretary, CJP, Teesta Setalvad.

Exactly seven years ago, The Gulbarg Society - witnessed gruesome killings by rioting mobs. Seven years down the line, the message from survivors is this - Punish those who planned and executed the riots.
