On Friday, Sheikh Jamalludin, a TB patient, apparently went asking for water from one Sunanda Prasad in her house in the narrow lanes of Watgunge in Kolkata. Sunanda in her bid to rid herself of the intruder called out for help. Her neighbours allege Jamal was carrying a knife with which he tried to frighten her.
“What sympathy are they trying to gain by claiming a Muslim boy didn’t get water in a Bengali's house? If he was so innocent then why did he run?” a resident of the area, Molly Majumdar asked.
Reports say Jamal was chased by a mob and beaten mercilessly. Jamal’s inconsolable mother Nasima bibi also revealed that Jamal was suffering from tuberculosis for the last two years.
“Where will he get a knife from and that too after coming out from the hospital? We are depending upon the police. If the police cannot do anything then we have to take action,” she said.
Jamal was reportedly rescued by the police who dispersed the mob. “The police was informed and we took him to the police station where he complained of assault and we filed a criminal case. The prime accused has been arrested,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Port, Anand Kumar said.
Jamal breathed his last on Sunday and his family says it was because of the beating. What remains to be seen is whether this was a case of Sunanda's attempt at self-defense or an innocent man's fatal tryst with mob fury.
