New Delhi: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was accorded a red-carpet welcome as he arrived in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad on Sunday.
Ahmadinejad is the first Iranian president to visit Iraq in decades.
The visit is aimed at strengthening ties between the two neighbours, who had fought a bloody, eight year long war in the 1980's.
Relations have considerably improved following the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq.
However, protests against the Iranian President's visit did break out in Fallujah. Over two hundred protestors took to the streets carrying banners condemning the visit.
Meanwhile, a bomb blast killed 16 people in Baghdad despite heavy security for Ahmadinejad's visit.
