Chennai: It's a two page letter that rules out any rapproachment between DMK chief Karunanidhi and his grand nephews Kalanidhi and Dayanidhi Maran. Karunanidhi has written the piece in his party mouthpiece Murasoli, accusing the Maran brothers of carrying out a malicious campaign against the DMK.
In the letter, Karunanidhi says: "I can tolerate my grandsons as a grandfather. But when they continue to malign my government and the party that I lead then how can I tolerate it as a leader?"
The split between Karunanidhi and the Marans took an ugly turn in May 2007, when a Maran family-owned newspaper published an opinion poll on Karunanidhi's successor. The poll, which gave Karunanidhi's son M K Azhagir two per cent votes, resulted in an attack by Azhagir's followers on the newspapers office in Madurai. The attack left three employees dead.
In his letter Karunanidhi for the first time openly defends his son M K Azhagiri and says: "The poll published despite my requests, had included the names of my children Kanimozhi and Azhagiri when they had no such aspirations. It seemed to be aimed at creating bitterness within my family."
He further adds that: "M K Azhagiri himself may not have been provoked by it, but his followers became emotional and indulged in violence without Azhagiri's knowledge. Who is responsible for the violence and the loss of lives?"
Countering virtually every allegation made by the DMK Chief, Kalanidhi Maran has now sent a 12-page letter to Karunanidhi, asserting that it was a conspiracy against them by those close to Karunanidhi that resulted in the split and also making it clear that they never did anything against the party.
Dayanidhi Maran says, "Today I am giving you the letter written by my brother Kalanidhi Maran to my grandfather and leader. This is not a reply or a counter to my leader's letter. It's a self-explanatory letter on all the questions that have been raised and debated in public."
It's not the first time that Karunanidhi has burst out against the Marans, but this time it's a clear message to his party that time has not diluted the bitterness within the family and that there is no scope for any rapproachment.
