Mumbai: It was yet another strong session for the markets without any signs of weakness. After the Sensex breached the 17,000 mark on Wednesday, the Nifty crossed the 5,000 level on Thursday. Metal and technology are the star performers.
The sentiment has been very positive and liquidity is abundant which has been taking the markets to new heights.
The wide-based National Stock Exchange benchmark, Nifty, took 52 days to move from 4,500-5000 level and 203 days to move from 4000-5000.
All the sector indices are green. Cement, power and technology are looking smart in Thursday's session. Metal and technology are the star performers. The rupee is trading at around 39.73 per USD.
Top gainers on the indices are Sterlite Ind, Tata Steel, Reliance Energy, Infosys, ACC, ONGC. Top losers on the Sensex are HPCL, BPCL, Rel Petro, Ambuja Cement, HUL and Bharti Airtel. Sensex was up 229.17 points or 1.35 per cent at 17150.56, and the Nifty up 60.05 points or 1.22 per cent at 5000.55.
About 1422 shares have advanced, 1542 shares declined, and 69 shares are unchanged. The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 7,783.26 up 0.7 per cent. The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,591.35 up 1 per cent.
The BSE FMCG Index closed at 2,120.28 down 0.8 per cent. Godrej Consumer, Tata Tea, ITC, United Brewerie closed in green. The BSE Metal Index closed at 13,502.60 up 3 per cent. Sterlite Ind, Sesa Goa, Tata Steel, SAIL, Hindalco, Shree Precoated were among the gainers.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 1 per cent at 3,720.23. Orchid Chemical, Glenmark, Cipla, Sun Pharma closed higher. The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.3 per cent at 14,691.07. Reliance Infra, BHEL, BEML, Punj Lloyd, Bharat Elec ended higher.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,270.66 up 1.1 per cent. MICO, Apollo Tyres, Hind Motors, Cummins, Escorts were among the gainers. The BSE IT Index closed at 4,643.43 up 3 per cent. Infosys, I-Flex Solution, Tech Mahindra, Mphasis, HCL Tech ended higher.
The BSE Bankex was up 1.2 per cent at 9,229.52. Karnataka Bank, Axis Bank, SBI, HDFC Bank, Bank of Baroda closed higher. The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 9,639.10 up 0.2 per cent. GAIL and ONGC closed in green
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 9603.37 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 86226.41 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 7720.82 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 114714.62 crore.
The rally in the bourses was backed by blue chip stocks such as Reliance group, Bharti Tele and capital good stocks. Support also came in from firming global markets.
Marketmen said firming US Dow Jones Industrial index and Nasdaq and Asian stocks boosted the trading sentiment. Hong Kong market index Hang Seng surged above the psychological 27,000-point mark in the morning trade, as Wall Street gains and fund inflows pushed the market further into record territory.
