Rajasthan MLA forces minors to donate blood

Jaipur: In an alleged case of child abuse in Rajasthan's Chomu district the local MLA celebrated Rajiv Gandhi's 65th birth anniversary by asking minors to donate blood.

One of the 50 government school students who was allegedly asked to donate blood fell unconscious after the ordeal.

Congress MLA Bhagwan Sahai Saini allegedly tried to show his loyalty to the Gandhi family by organising a blood donation camp to mark former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary on Thursday in which over 50 students from a nearby school were made to participate.

The blood donation almost cost 15-year-old Anil.

"Blood was taken from him and he was left unattended. They told me they took blood from him as he was fit. My son says the students were made to give blood on the MLA's directions," claimed Anil's mother Kiran.

"When he regained consciousness, he told me that he was forced to give blood," said his father Om Prakash.

Eyewitnesses say the organisers could not rope in enough people to donate blood. So they lured in students with promises of blood donation certificates and free snacks.

The MLA though has denied the allegation

"This is a political conspiracy. My rivals are doing it. I did not ask the school children to donate blood. Anyways, it is the responsibility of the doctors not to take blood from children," said Sahai.

The school authorities have claimed that they had no idea of what was going on. But students said they were threatened with expulsion if they spoke against the donation.

"The MLA told us you'll get a certificate for this. They took us on the pretext of a blood test and now the school authorities are telling us if we speak up they'll give us TCs," said one of the student Suresh.

But the threat did not scare off the angry students and they took out a protest march through the town.

What has been more shocking is that the police are yet to initiate action in the matter.

Despite the pressure from parents and the students, the police have not even registered a case.
