Chakradharpur, Jharkhand: MLA Sukhram Oraon has taught the people of his constituency it is never too late to learn.
Oraon 39, recently appeared for the Class X exam after dropping out of school 23 years ago. What makes Oraon’s resolve to learn more admirable is that his young son too appeared for the same exam and in the same classroom in Chakradharpur.
Twenty-three years ago Oraon’s family could not afford to educate him and he had to leave school. Oraon says he decided to learn again so that he could serve his constituency.
“I am the guardian of 2 lakh people and education will help me serve them better. Illiterate public representatives are often fooled and misled by qualified IAS and IPS officers,” says Oraon.
Oraon's son, Sunny, shared his Class X books with his father and also helped in studies. “My father worked hard for his exam and I am glad that we appeared for it together. I am glad that we were in the same classroom,” says Sunny.
The MLA's decision to complete his studies has made his old school teacher happy. Rabindra Nath Sarangi taught Oraon in 1984 and finding him back in school makes him proud.
“I am sure the MLA will succeed because he has been sincere in his studies,” says Sarangi.
