Hyderabad: Those who threatened to kill Bangladeshi writer, Taslima Nasreen are still free, while now her attackers have filed an FIR against her for provoking Muslim sentiment.

“We in Hyderabad want to behead this woman according to the fatwa,” said Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi. Death threats like these against Nasreen has forced the Hyderabad police to finally act against leaders of radical political outfits Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen and Majlis Bachao Tehreek.

"We have approached the court to book cases against MIM and MBT for criminal intimidation,” said Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh.

If the court gives a green signal, MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi and MBT Spokesperson Farath Ullah Khan, could be booked as early as Monday. But this isn't deterring them from continuing their tirade, which is being seen as a game of political one-upmanship for the Muslim vote.

"I will kill Taslima Nasreen, Salman Rushdie, the Danish Cartoonist and anyone who tried to play with the modesty, honour and integrity of the Prophet. And, I am ready to go to gallows even for this," said Farath Ullah Khan of the MBT.

It's a catch 22 situation for the government, a strong stand against the MIM would mean going against an ally and hurting the sentiments of the Muslim community while keeping mum would mean aligning with the acts and views of the radicals.
