Mumbai: Scores of students preparing for the railway entrance exam were attacked by Raj Thackeray's MNS supporters in Mumbai, stepping up its campaign against North Indians.

MNS activists wielding batons and pelting stones chased away North Indian students camping at the Thane railway station in the wee hours of the morning to appear for the railway recruitment board examination held at various centers across Mumbai.

The reason for such act by the MNS activists is their burning desire to be territorial, which is fuelling the anti-North Indian sentiment.

Vice President, MNS Student's Wing Ashish Jadhav said, “Raj sahab ne bola hai assi pratishat marathi bhashik har jagah uske liye vacancy mangta hai, tho woh hisaab se hona chahiye..agar woh nahin hota hai to hum aandolan ki tayyari mein hain (Raj Thackeray has said that there has to be 80 per cent reservation for Maharashtrians. If that doesn't happen we'll protest).”

MNS workers staged protests and pelted stones injuring a few candidates at exam centers across suburbs like Borivli, Dombivali, Bhandup, Kalyan and in Sion in central Mumbai.

Candidate from Bihar said, “People came shouting and started beating us. We ran.”

Not to be left behind in upping the ante against North Indians, even Shiv Sainiks barged into a center in Navi Mumbai and drove off the students demanding there be no examination even as the state government watched helplessly.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said, “This will not be tolerated. If the Railway authorities had informed us beforehand we would have taken necessary action.”

Keeping the upcoming elections in mind, it seems both the parties (MNS and Shiv Sainiks) are competing. to be the crusaders of the Marathi cause. One wonders if there's an end in sight to such blatant territorialisation.
