Mob fury in hospital over dead baby
Kolkata: A private hospital in Kolkata was ransacked on Tuesday by an angry mob after the death of an 11-month-old child.
The relatives of the deceased protested after news spread that the child, Mohammad Ghulam Ali, died due to medical negligence at the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI).
The child was admitted to the hospital over a month ago with congenital ailments and underwent a surgery five days ago.
“For the last five days, the doctors hardly provided treatment to the child. They attended only after repeated requests from us. And suddenly last night they declared that the child has expired,” a relative of the child, Sajit said.
Events took a turn for the worse when hospital authorities allegedly refused to release the body on account of some pending bills. Police resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control but authorities, however, denied any such charges.
"There is no question of any allegations,” CEO of CMRI, Aroop Barua said.
The matter was finally resolved but not before raising some serious security concerns inside hospital premises of the city.
