Surat: Many residents of Surat see justice in a mob beating up three men accused of raping a 17-year-old schoolgirl.
Shahid Saiyad, Tariq Qutubuddhin Saiyad and Abu Bakr Sheikh, who are accused of raping girl in a car and then dumping her outside a mall, were beaten up when they were brought to the Civil Hospital for a medical examination on Saturday.
The police officials with the three suspects made efforts to protect them but the angry crowd freely punched and kicked them. The assault on the rape suspects, two of whom are the sons of police officials, was justified, said many people.
“People regard the police as protectors but it policemen’s sons who raped the girl. What happened to the accused is correct,” said one woman.
"The accused should be hung in public and then so punished that they cannot even look at women,” said another woman.
A crowd comprising mostly women pitched out the city police commissioner's office and shouted slogans against the police. "The incident was a reflection of peoples' anger. We did our best to bring matters under control," said Subhash Trivedi, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch.
The three suspects were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
