Vadodara: Railway officer B B Sharma has been tried, judged and punished--by a mob.
Sharma, a traveling ticket examiner, was on Saturday beaten up by train passengers who accused him causing the death of a man fell from a train.
Passengers of the Viragram train, which was traveling to Mumbai from Vadodara, first punched and kicked Sharma when the train stopped at the Makarpura station. They then dragged him to the platform, beat him with sticks and threw chairs at him.
They claimed that Sharma had slapped a man called Arvind Ninama, who was allegedly travelling without a train ticket and then threw him out of the train. Ninama died of his injuries at a hospital later.
Sharma is in a critical condition at a railway hospital, said A Srivastava, divisional railway manager, Vadodara.
"The passengers had no right to take law into their own hands. They should have handed him (Sharma) over to the police," Srivastava told PTI.
Shrivastava said he had formed a three-member "fact finding team" to probe the attack on Sharma. Police have registered a complaint against unnamed passengers.
