New Delhi: More than two months after CNN-IBN first questioned whether Tariq Dar, a Kashmiri model, was a terrorist or not, the man has been released from Tihar Jail.
Tariq Dar was absolved of all charges by the Tis Hazari Court after the Delhi Police failed to file a chargesheet against him in the three months that he was in judicial custody, reportedly due to lack of evidence.
He will be released from Tihar Jail at 2000 hrs IST.
Three months ago, a Delhi Police Special Cell had deported Tariq from Bangladesh, in connection with the Delhi bomb blasts of 2005.
He was accused of having alleged terrorist links with the Lashkar-e-Toiba.
However, till date no concrete evidence have been found. Dar had been arrested on September 16 last year by the Bangladesh Rapid Action Force for possession of forged travel documents.
Bangladesh had also alleged that Dar was an agent of India's Research and Analysis Wing.
Tariq's family had approached J&K minister Saifuddin Soz, who spoke to the Foreign Ministry, which in turn contacted Bangladesh to secure his release.
The model was later deported to New Delhi from Dhaka.
Ironically, on his arrival in New Delhi, Tariq was arrested by the Special Cell for alleged links with the Lashkar-e-Toiba.
On Wednesday, the Delhi Police filed a closure report as they haven't been able to file a proper chargesheet against Tariq and also because Tariq's three month judicial custody ends on January 24.
Educated in Delhi, Tariq spent the last two years successfully running a handicrafts business in Bangladesh. He is also a known face in print commercials of leading brands and is somewhat of a star in Dhaka's advertising circuit.
In less than two months, from being a face that dominated hoardings and commercials in Bangladesh, Tariq was accused of human trafficking, spying for India and a terror conduit across two nations.
However, with a suspect in the New Delhi blasts of 2005 with the same name - Tariq Dar - there is also a mistaken identity theory floating around.
