Have no bullets to fight terror: Guj govt

Ahmadabad: After praising the Centre for providing necessary support to combat terrorism, at the meeting of Chief Ministers last month, the Gujarat government is now accusing the UPA government for not providing enough funds for the state police. But the Congress claims that the funds are being misused to buy luxury cars for officers.

Modi may have praised the Centre on the issue of combating terrorism but his Home Minister Amit Shah is singing a different tune. He has alleged that despite several requests, it has not been provided enough bullets by the Centre.

"The Gujarat police has guns, but no bullets and the Central government is responsible for this. For past three years, we have been asking for bullets but they are not giving," Shah alleged.

The Congress, on the other hand claims that the Central Government funds to buy weapons are in fact being misused by the Modi government.

"Central government is providing funds to purchase weapons.. Not to purchase vehicles. The Gujarat government has used the funds to purchase luxury cars for officers," claims Arjun Modhvadia, Congress Spokesperson.

The Comptroller and Auditor General's report for the year ending March 2009 confirms this.

According to it, the vehicles were bought against the Government of India's instructions and allotted to ineligible officers and that the Gujarat Government has not prepared a plan for the modernisation of the police force.

Perhaps the most unfortunate part of this episode is that politics has overshadowed even an issue like combating terrorism.
