Modi meet: ex-DGP rebuts Bhatt's claim

Meghdoot Sharon, CNN-IBN

Gandhinagar: Sanjiv Bhatt has reignited the debate surrounding the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat with his sworn affidavit before the Supreme Court alleging Narendra Modi ordered the state administration to go slow on the rioters post the Godhra incident.

Tarachand Chand Yadav, the driver who claims to have driven Sanjiv Bhatt to the chief minister's residence on the evening of February 27, 2002 is backing this testimony.

Tarachand Yadav said, "I drove him there and he was there for almost half hour."

The Supreme Court constituted SIT into the Gujarat riots in its report to the court has not relied on Bhatt's statement because his superiors including GC Raigar - the then intelligence chief and Bhatt's boss did not confirm his presence at cheif minister residence.

Some others like the then DGP police K Chakravarty, home secretary K Nityanandam and Ahmedabad Police Chief PC Pande have refuted Bhatt's claims.

Interestingly post retirement, Nityanandam now has a government posting as MD, Police Housing Corporation and Pande is the Chairman of the Police Housing Corporation - both are government posts.

While Modi's alleged role in the riots will always be debated, Bhatt's claims have brought to the fore another important development - how credible and impartial is the investigation that is being carried out by the Supreme Court monitored SIT.
