Modi 'appeasing rich and ignoring the poor'

Ahmedabad: Narendra Modi, CEO of a Vibrant Gujarat – that's the picture that the CM of Gujarat has tried to portray since the riots of 2002. Three investor summits, endless meetings with business czars, brand new industrial policies, endless proposals for SEZs and now the icing on the cake – a business-friendly Modi has abolished octroi.

Appreciation is flowing in in the form of flowers and perhaps some election funds as well.

"He is very good. There's been excellent development and he has done an excellent job. He's promising. He's great,” says President, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Paru Jaikrishna.

"Fortune favours the brave and Narendra Modi has been an effective leader. The industry has got opportunities to grow under his rule,” adds Industrialist, Jaimin Vyas.

At the business meet held on Sunday, Modi responded in kind.

" I'm placing this felicitation of mine at your feet. Lets be partners in the progress of the state and lets accelerate growth together,” Modi said.

But the main Opposition Congress smells an opportunity here. The party is highlighting the plight of the common man, saying Modi has helped only industrialists. It is citing farmer suicides and high crime rates. It wants to pitch five crore Gujaratis against him.

"Modi says development has happened. Yes it has. But it’s of just five crorepatis. Not five crore Gujaratis,” says Spokesperson, Congress, Kapil Sibal.

The industry really has nothing to complain against Narendra Modi.. In fact, he has behaved like a CEO himself. The question though being asked is – Is the welfare of industry more important than well-being of the downtrodden sections of society?
