New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday urged the youth of the state to brush up their English speaking skills and said a campaign will soon be launched to help them in this regard.

"If Gujarat wants to stand up to global competition and extend its influence across the world, its youth have to learn to speak effective English," PTI quoted Modi speaking at a Ceramic Association in Rajkot district.

He also said that his government planned to start English speaking courses for people in the age group of 15-35.

"The youth should be able to talk in English. It is a drawback that youth from this state are hesitant while talking in English because they are not fluent enough," he added.

Speaking at the association gathering, he told the members to set up a research and training institute to develop new technologies in the ceramic sector which will make their products cheap and cost- effective.

This institute will create new managers, technical staff and the human resource needed for the ceramic industry, he said. He urged people and industry to help make Morbi the cleanest city of Gujarat.

Modi also inaugurated a gas-grid project in the region that will benefit the ceramic industry.
