Modi's I-told-you-so comment has Govt red

New Delhi: Hours after blasts rocked the national capital, the political blame game had already begun. Leading the Opposition charge Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the who had calmly managed a terror-stricken Gujarat just two months ago.

At the BJP's national executive, Modi accused the Government of going soft on terror and challenged the UPA to clear strong anti-terror laws like the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime Act.

“I met the PM 10 days ago and warned him that during interrogation of the Gujarat blast mastermind. We were told the next target is Delhi. Preparations are done, we are just waiting for the orders,” he said.

But after the blasts, a red-faced Congress declined to bite the bait. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said it was not appropriate to blame the police or the investigative agencies.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil too had the standard answer ready. “Investigations are on, those responsible will be brought to book,” he said.

But the worry is clearly telling on the Congress. With state and Lok Sabha polls around the corner, terror could become a major election issue. Hours before the Delhi blasts, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had flagged terrorism as a priority concern at the Congress Central Working Committee meet.

The party fears it may neutralise the feel-good factor generated by the approval of the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Modi said playing politics over terror attacks was not his intention. “There should be no politics as far as terrorism is concerned. On terrorism, it is my conviction that the country's voice should be united. All I said was that we had credible information with us that Delhi would be attacked soon, very soon. I had personally informed the PM, NSA and Home Minister about it. I don't want to blame anyone for what happened,” he said.
