Men accused of molesting 2 women get bail

Mumbai: Forty-eight hours after a complaint was registered in the molestation case that shamed Mumbai on New Year's day, the Mumbai Police claims to have cracked the case.

Fourteen people from across the city were detained on Thursday evening and produced in court on Friday.

Though they were remanded to judicial custody till January 19 on Friday morning, all of them have been given bail on a surety of Rs 10,000 each.

The first breakthrough in the case came when two of the accused — Ravi Shukla and Nilesh — surrendered at the Juhu Police Station. This led to a chain of arrests across the metropolis.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), K L Prasad says, "The photos confirm the presence of four of the men who have been arrested. Others who have been detained have confessed to being a part of the mob, but say that they did not molest the women. These men have been charged with unlawful assembly."

He also said that some more arrests are likely for it seemed that there were two to three different groups of men who molested the women.

So how exactly did the police crack the case? Senior Inspector, Taralapurkar says, "An informer in East Parel told us about the accused being there

K L Prasad said that all of the men were educated only till 8th or 10th standard, they were mostly unemployed or doing odd jobs and living off their parents.

And while the pictures that had been taken by the Hindustan Times photographers are proof enough, the police feel that even minimal co-operation from the victims will only strengthen the case. They are still looking for one man, whose face is very prominent in the pictures.

However, all the offences under which the men have been charged are bailable and the challenge now for the police is to build a foolproof case, which will stand the test of a legal trial.
