Cuttack (Orissa): It is what can be called an inter-religious marriage with a difference. The bride and groom were slightly down the evolutionary ladder than most couples.
The baratis were definitely humans, but again the bride and groom were not.
And of you think that this is just another marriage, think again.
The marriage of two monkeys, Shankar and Liti, was a grand affair in Govindpur. And what makes this union truly secular is that while a Hindu owns Shankar, Liti’s owner is a Muslim.
“The mandir and masjid are one. God is one,” says Liti’s owner, Sheikh Azimudin.
While the temple priest Ramakanta Pratihari adds,” It is a good example of Hindu-Muslim unity.”
The marriage was solemnised according to customary Hindu rites, complete with priests chanting mantras.
The ceremony was followed by a lavish feast organised by the bride's house. And that was a perfect opportunity for the people of Govindpur to celebrate together.
However, for Shankar's owner Niranjan Moharana, fostering Hindu-Muslim unity wasn't the only reason for the marriage.
Says Moharana, “The monkey population is dwindling so I got them married.”
