Monsoon madness begins in Mumbai

CNN-IBN

Mumbai: India’s financial capital got the season's first bout of heavy downpour on Friday night leading to chaos, traffic disruptions and washing clean the municipal corporation's half-hearted efforts to prevent waterlogging.

Several long-distance and local trains were reported running late on Friday after overnight rains flooded the Bandra-Mahim-Harbour railway line, causing signal failure.

The pre-monsoon showers lasted over two hours on Friday night and caused severe waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas.

Many commuters were stranded on the flooded streets as their vehicles broke down. While central Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 25-30 mm, the suburbs received about 36 mm of rain past midnight.

Several taxi drivers refused to ply towards the low-lying areas ... Many people were stranded till late in the night.

Said a commuter Jay Melda, "We've been waiting for half an hour, but these taxiwallas refused due to the rain"

For taxi drivers though, it seemed a tough call: make that extra buck past midnight or wade through keep-deep water once the engine breaks down.

A taxi driver Laxmiprasad said, “Our car broke down. We had to ask the passenger to get down.”

While central Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 25-30 mm, suburbs received about 36 mm of rain past midnight.

The downpour has exposed the Mumbai corporation's claims about their preparations for the rains. The met department says there'll be more rains over the next two days.
