Monsoon misery: Diseases hit Mumbai hard

Mumbai: Just when hospitals across Mumbai started dealing with an increasing number of fever and gastroenteritis patients, they are reeling under a steady rise in malaria and dengue cases.

In the last week there have been five deaths due to malaria and dengue and many patients like Rajendra Navadekar are spending time and money on treatment.

Says Rajendra, ""I had fever and shivering for many days, so my family doctor said, get admitted and I came here."

At Mumbai's municipal KEM hospital, two patients have succumbed to malaria in just four days t that has put health authorities on alert.

Doctors have now been directed to treat all fever patients for symptoms of malaria and dengue.

"We're treating patients of dengue, malaria and we're on alert for such serious patients," says dean, KEM hospital, Dr M E Yeolekar.

The number of patients of monsoon-related illnesses is on an upswing with:

  • 303 fever cases.
  • 178 gastroenteritis cases.
  • Three leptospirosis cases.
  • dengue cases.
  • 33 malaria cases.

And its not just the suburbs that are facing the mosquito menace, South-Mumbai resident, Ashok Thakker succumbed to dengue at Jaslok hospital on Saturday.

And worse than that, his son and daughter have also been diagnosed with dengue.

Says physician, Jaslok hospital, Dr Ayesha Sunawala, "This time even posh areas are reporting such cases. On an average, we are admitting five to seven patients a week."

With the swankiest areas in town being hit by the monsoon diseases, it is perhaps time for the BMC to step up its anti-mosquito drive.
