Mumbai: The monsoon in Mumbai has got extended this year too. And heavy rains in the city for the past few days have dampened hopes of the fishermen who traditionally start work after the fishing festival of Narali Powrnima, which coincides with Rakshabandhan.

"We generally start business after Narali Poonam, but this year we are facing a lot of problems. There is heavy rain, winds and we are unable to go fishing,” said a fisherman, Padmakar Mhatre.

As per tradition, the fishermen have painted and decorated their boats for the festival. But the colourful boats are still lying anchored on the shores. While some brave hearts do venture out, they hardly get enough catches making a loss ranging from Rs 200 to 700 per day.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has also issued warnings to the fishermen. But, the officials indicate that they are not in a position to say when the conditions would improve.

"There are no winds but tides and associated rains, especially in the Konkan region, so it maybe better (for them) to wait and see,” says Deputy Director General, MET, C V V Bhadram.
