BMC worried about old buildings in Mumbai

Mumbai: The first monsoon showers in Mumbai have brought back the fear of building collapses in the city.

As a standard precautionary measure the civic authorities have issued eviction notices to residents of 150 dilapidated structures but most residents have refused to move out.

The Jadhavs are busy packing up all their belongings in a few days they will have to move out of the Girgaum chawl they have occupied for the last 70 years - that's because the civic authorities have issued an eviction notice to residents of this dilapidated structure but the residents seem to prefer their old building to the transit accommodation.

Amey Jadhav said, “The transit accommodation is in the worst possible area, there is no space for all of us. Its better to stay on here than go there. "

The repair of the building is long overdue but residents say the eviction notice period is short and it will be difficult for them to adjust to a far off transit camp, which lacks basic facilities.

Civic authorities say that they try their best to provide a good alternative accommodation, but residents tend to be very choosy about the transit accommodation.

Mumbai has around 19000 cessed buildings. The civic authorities have identified 667 buildings as likely to collapse this monsoon. Of these 150 have been classified as most dangerous to live in while 79 buildings have been issued immediate eviction notices.

But residents don't seem to trust the survey results.

Hiten Garath, resident of the society, said, “I think my building is sound, give me a structural engineer's report then I will agree to this."

And for the Jadhavs, the options of shifting or staying on seem to be equally complicated.
