New Delhi: The statement made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a speech to National Development Council on Muslim minority on Saturday snowballed into a furore in Parliament on Monday.
That apart, not much business was conducted in Parliament.
That’s because the Opposition refused to buy the Government's clarification on the PM's remark on the first claim to resources for minorities.
In an interview to CNN-IBN, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia clarifies what the Prime Minister had actually said.
Ahluwalia said, “What he said was that they, in other words, all these items should have the first claim on resources. So, to focus on only one element is to my mind misleading.”
“But he (PM) did say, and that's what the approach document says that the minority especially Muslims, and there's evidence brought out in the Sachar committee report, that they're not getting an equitable share of development. So, putting that among other priorities as a first priority is (I think) the meaning of inclusiveness, and that's what the plan is all about, “ he added.
