Moral police on prowl, then and even now

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The disgrace in Mangalore has put the spotlight on self styled moral police but the list of offenders runs long. And in almost every case, the perpetrators who were arrested under pressure have all been let off.

The moral police are out there across the country all year round targeting unsuspecting lovers, card shops, parks, pubs and colleges.

When the world gets ready to celebrate Valentines Day, back home the occasion is a day of protest. Not just the Hindu hardliners, two years ago, Burkha-clad women from Dukhtaran-e-Millat stormed gift shops and burnt Valentine cards in Srinagar.

Instances of intolerance have risen in the recent years.

  • In April 2007, the Mumbai Police overstepped their brief by booking nearly 100 couples at Bandra sea front, under sections of vulgarity and obscenity.
  • Hindu Rashtra Sena vandalised Star News office the same year for carrying news of an intercaste couple who had eloped.
  • VHP and Bajrang Dal came out in full support of cops of Meerut who went around town beating couples in parks in 2005.
  • Three years ago a girl was allegedly harassed by fellow students for wearing jeans and T-shirt at the Aligarh Muslim University.
  • The same year constables of the Noida Police beat up a man allegedly for talking to a female friend in a market.

Caste, sex, religion hold no bar, the moral police is watching and may strike when you least expect it.
