Azamgarh: In the second such incident in three days, more than 20 people were injured and five vehicles damaged in a clash between two communities in the Shrinagar Bazar area on Saturday that police brought under control by firing in the air, lobbying teargas shells and using force.
Heavy police force has been deployed in the area and district administration officials claimed that the situation was now peaceful.
Trouble started when five bus loads of Ulema Council activists, who were on their way back to Bilariyaganj town from the state capital, allegedly raised provocative slogans.
A local mob then stopped the buses and resorted to brick batting.
Senior officials including DIG Vijay Kumar, District Magistrate G S Priyadarshi and SSP Ramit Sharma rushed to the the spot with heavy police force and broke up the fight.
This is the second such clash in the past few days as on Thursday last, another group of Council activists while on their way to attend a protest meet in Lucknow clashed with the local people after which station officer of Kandhrapur was suspended.
