New Delhi: Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai says that a mere increase in troops may no be the solution to insurgency in Afghanistan.
Karzai said so while speaking to Foreign Affairs Analyst Fareed Zakaria on CNN's Global Public Square.
"If there is any troop deployment, with consultation with Afghan Government, it should be in places where fight against terrorism gets us a result, where terrorists are. Where we see better security. Not in our villages, definitely not in our villages," said Karzai.
"Attacking al-Qaeda sanctuaries, training ground, personnel, is a legitimate target. But the question of passing Pakistan troops into Afghanistan, this is sometime Government of Afghanistan and Pakistan and US must work together, agree and then implement," he said.
US President Barack Obama has already approved adding some 17,000 troops for the war in Afghanistan, his first significant move to change the course of a conflict that his closest military advisers have warned the United States is not winning.
"This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires," Obama said in a statement.
