More women opt for caesarean delivery

New Delhi: Caesarean section or C-sec deliveries rate is almost as high as 65 per cent in the some of the private hospitals in New Delhi.

“There is a trend for women opting for Caesarean section these days especially in the upper socio-economical strata because of astrological reasons, and they want to avoid labour pain altogether,” says senior gynaecologist, Dr Rinku Sengupta.

A 33-year-old bank executive Nidhi Chopra had her first child by C-sec because of complications during pregnancy.

But despite a normal pregnancy she chose to deliver her second child by C-sec. Though she was informed about the advantages and disadvantages of the delivery.

“The first baby was just like a cakewalk. I was running around on the second day itself. Also when I heard about the pain that a woman undergoes during labour I opted for a C-sec for the second one as well. I did not have any problems with first C-sec as well,” says Chopra.

Experts and gynaecologist claim that on an average they get almost 40 to 50 per cent of elective caesarean delivery cases.

However, according to WHO C-sec births should be restricted between 15 to 20 per cent. The risks that our involved with C-sec births include breastfeeding problems, urinary, wound and uterine infection, hemorrhage, clotting disorders, bowel obstruction, chronic pelvic pain and premature separation of the placenta in a subsequent pregnancy.

“There is nothing like having a vaginal delivery. Caesarean delivery should only be done when it is indicated and in cases of women with severe obstetric cases who have lost children earlier and who have conceived after a long time, and those having other abnormalities,” says senior gynaecologist, Dr Urmila Sharma.

Gynaecologists claim that lifestyle is another factor leading to complications that in turn leads to cesareans births, hence the rising number of cesareans births.

The reasons range from late pregnancies to sedentary lifestyle of the workingwomen. Work related stress can also cause high blood pressure and diabetes. This increases one's odds of having a C-sec.

Every woman has a right to choose between a C-sec and a normal delivery. But she also has a right to be well informed about the decision she makes.
