Indian women forced into early marriage, says report

New Delhi: In a candid admission on the eve of India's 60th Independence day government says that nearly 45 per cent of the women are still being married at 18 years or below.

A recent survey by Women and Child Development Ministry reveals that most women are married young even 60-years after Independence. The laws against child marriage haven’t been an effective deterrent clearly. A day before the nation turned 60, the government had to accept this hard reality in Parliament.

Quoting the preliminary findings of the third National Family Health Survey the Women and Child Development Ministry has admitted that 44.5 per cent of women aged between 20-24 have reported to have been married by 18-years of age and nearly 72 per cent of these women are not educated.

That’s one of the reasons why there is a growing demand for making registration of marriages compulsory.

In a report tabled in Parliament, a Parliamentary committee has admitted to make registration of marriages compulsory. But this proposal has been with the government for some time now. It has been shuttling between the two ministries—the ministry for Women And Child Development and the Law.

While the latter has been insisting that the proposed law should apply only Hindus to begin with, while the Women And Child Development ministry wants a uniform legislation.

"This law is needed because once you know that what are the number of marriages, you can also determine how many are child brides, where are their migratory patterns,” said Minister of state Renuka Chawdhery.

As disagreement persists and the ministry of law sits over the bill, women in India continue to be married below 18 years of age.
