Mother helps cops trace son charged with rape

Balasore: A 50-year-old mother helped the police arrest her son Nitai Mohanty who has been charged with rape.

Chhayamani Mohanty is inconsolable as her 22-year-old son Nitai Mohanty has been sent to Balasore jail on charges of raping a 35-year-old woman.

However, it is not his innocence that the 50-year old is crying out for, it was Chhayamani who helped police find the accused.

"My son has done a very heinous crime and it was my duty to get him arrested. But at the same time the mother in me still misses my son,” says Chhayamani.

Chhayamani is a widow and Nitai was the only earning member in her family. And though her son's arrest has increased her hardship, she chose to do only what was right.

"The mother on her own came to us and told that since her son had committed the crime, he should be punished. She took us to the neighbouring West Bengal village, where her son was hiding. I have never seen such courage by a mother before. She has set an example for others,” says Investigating officer, Bhograi Police station, Parsuram Sahu.

People here are contrasting her case with that of former DGP B B Mohanty, who allegedly helped his rape convict son Bitti jump parole and go into hiding.

"While a top cop is not obeying the law to save his rapist son, the act of Chhayamani is very rare indeed. We salute this mother,” says Chhayamani's Neighbour, Pratap Samal.
