Chennai: Nineteen-year-old Sunil doesn't do cocaine or heroin, he does Ket instead. It's the latest rage amongst Chennai's college crowd – ketamines, which is simply called ket.

An anesthetic used on animals, ketamines have fast replaced ecstasy and heroin as Chennai's newest drug to get high on.

And it's not just the price factor, Rs 120 per vial, or the easy availability of the drug at all veterinary pharmacies that makes it so popular. “It's a relatively safe drug to use. You can't overdose on ket because it's an anesthetic, you pass out before you overdose,” a ketamine user, Sunil (name changed) said.

Ket is not a party drug. Rather, ket users describe the experience as a relaxing, but mind blowing one.

“Your body goes numb. You lose perception of time and space. You can feel the blood running slowly through every vein in your body. You feel like the bones in your fingers are growing out of your skin,” Sunil said.

With more and more college students taking to Ket, doctors in the city are a worried lot, especially considering the damage the drug can do.

“Ketamines damage brains cells. You may lose consciousness before you overdose, but anesthetics make you lose control over your stomach muscles and if you vomit while unconscious, you could choke to death. It is a very dangerous drug to use,” surgeon Dr R Nadhaswamy said.

Pharmacists have been asked by doctors not to sell the drug over the counter, but ask for a prescription instead. However, for the moment, ketamine abuse appears to be gaining more popularity everyday, irrespective of its dangers.
