Nagpur: The 4-year-old, who was allegedly raped in the Ghansour town of Madhya Pradesh and shifted to Nagpur, continues to be critical. She has suffered severe brain injuries and is on life support. While one of the accused has been arrested, the Madhya Pradesh police have announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh on the main accused, who is still absconding.
In Bhopal, women Congress workers thronged the gates of the Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Uma Shankar Gupta's residence demanding his resignation over rising crimes against women and children. After the bad press, the government tried some damage control. "The police have announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh on the accused. In most such cases the accused are normally those who know the victim," Gupta said.
While the police have arrested one Rakesh Chaudhary, the main accused, Feroze Khan, is absconding. Police teams have fanned out to various parts of the state but there is still no concrete lead on the 35-year-old's whereabouts. The child, meanwhile, continues to be critical having been put on life support.
Madhya Pradesh has the dubious distinction of topping the list of crimes against women. A couple of months ago, a minor was allegedly raped and murdered about 100 meters away from the state home minister's house while a Swiss tourist was allegedly gangraped while she was travelling along with her partner in Datia. Every time such incidents have happened, the MP government has shied away from fixing any accountability at the top.
