Bhopal: A Madhya Pradesh judicial commission has indicted three IPS officers of being behind the death of an assistant sub-inspector three years ago. Its the first ever case of policemen killing another policemen. But the BJP government, which appointed the commission, is now getting cold feet.
Assistant sub-inspector Diwari Lal Rawat was killed in Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh on January 31, 2004. The official police version was that he was shot dead by the dacoit Mahaveer Jat.
But now, a judicial commission says Rawat was actually killed by his colleagues. Rawat had been suspended from work, but then reinstated by the Inspector General of Gwalior, V K Pawar, without an enquiry.
Rawat was then put into the anti-dacoity cell, a decision the commission says was part of a conspiracy to kill him.
The commission also says that Harish Sharma, a sub-inspector of the Gram Suraksha Samiti, was sent with Rawat as part of the operation in violation of police rules. VK Pawar has denied the charges.
Madhya Pradesh Additional DGP VK Pawar said, "It has been proved that Rawat was killed by dacoit bullets and forensic reports have confirmed this.”
The Commission says that the conspiracy extended to covering up the crime as well. It points fingers at the then Deputy Inspector General of Gwalior Gazi Ram Meena, and then Superintendent of Police C S Malviya.
The Madhya Pradesh Congress has asked for a case to be registered against the officers named.
But the BJP government, which had appointed the commission, refuses to accept its recommendations. It has appointed a Cabinet sub-committee to look in to the issue.
Public Relations Minister Laxmi Kant Sharma said, "The commission has given its report but the cabinet has decided top form a sub committee."
The BM Gupta commission has also raised questions like why their was no sign of an encounter from the spot that was mentioned by the police and why Rawat was taken to a private hospital owned by a friend of Harish Sharma and not to a government hospital.
The findings of the commission have very clearly pointed towards the dubious role of these three IPS officers in the murder and from here on it will be very difficult for the state government to save them.
