Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh government has introduced a ban on covering faces while riding two-wheelers saying it is for security reasons.
Police personnel have been stopping girls on scooters and asking them to remove the scarves covering their faces.
"People who move around with their faces fully covered, girls and these days even boys... suspicious elements can also get away because of these scarves," says Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Uma Shanker Gupta.
But apparently the new law is more for moral policing than for security reasons.
The government taking the cue from sangh organisations wants to check young girls from moving around freely with boys without the knowledge of their parents.
Two-wheeler riders are not amused at the ban, especially with hot summer months approaching.
"We use the scarf to protect our faces from the heat and dust. If they don't allow us top wear this it will have an adverse effect. Certainly this is not done," says a student Priya.
Earlier such drives had failed because of resistance from the public.
But now the government has imposed a penalty of Rs 50 from April 1 onwards to make sure it is implemented.
