Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Food and Civil Supplies Department has recovered more than 20,000 quintals of illegally stocked sugar from godowns across the state out of which more than 4000 quintals have been seized in a raid at a warehouse in Morena.

The sugar was bought about a month ago at Rs 22 per kilo. The price of sugar now is Rs 32 per kilo but the hoarders were still waiting for a further hike by creating an artificial shortage in the market.

"We have recovered 23 quintals of sugar so far during the investigation worth around Rs 70 lakh. The price of sugar has fallen by Rs two-three after the investigations," claimed Morena Collector MK Aggarwal.

Raids were also conducted in Bhopal, Jabalpur and Indore resulting in recovery of 20,000 quintals of sugar.

"Those who are trying to take advantage of the situation and indulging in black marketing and hoarding will not be spared at any cost," warned Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

The Madhya Pradesh government has also formulated a new sugar policy and is issuing licences to those dealing in more than 2,000 quintals of sugar. But in spite of such measures sugar prices are yet to stabilise.

Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has said that he hoped to announce a solution by Wednesday after meeting the main players in the sugar industry.

"I have met the captains of the industry over the demand and supply of sugar and we hope to come out with a solution by Wednesday," said Pawar.
