New Delhi: A Muslim organisation on Monday said it had filed a plea in the Jabalpur High Court against the Madhya Pradesh government’s plan to organise Surya Namaskar in schools.

The Jamiat Ulma Hind has also requested Governor Balram Jakhar to prevent the BJP government from organising the event on January 25.

“The plea will be held on Tuesday," Haji Mohd Haron, executive committee member of the organisation, told PTI.

Haron said the organisation moved court after Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan didn’t listen to its appeal. The plan to "force students of all religions to perform Surya Namaskar is unconstitutional and against Islam."

Meanwhile, a group of Muslim leaders, led by state convenor of All India Muslim Personal Law Board Shamsuddin Afridi, gave a memorandum to Jakhar and sought his intervention.

Students were being forced to perform the Surya Namaskar and recite religious verses, which was against Islam, they claimed requesting Jakhar to "safeguard religious beliefs of Muslims" by asking the government to refrain from organising the programme.

The Government had planned to organise the programme across the state, wherein children will carry out Surya Namaskar and five 'pranayam' exercises, the appeal.
