Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Agricultural Minister Ramkrishna Kusmaria on Wednesday made a startling statement claiming that the recent spate of suicides by farmers in the state is because they are paying for old sins.
Kusmaria claimed that farmers had ruined agricultural land by using fertilizers and implied that they had paid for it by committing suicide.
"Farmers are committing suicides to pay for their old sins. They have made agriculture land barren by using fertilizers and chemicals," Kusmaria said.
At least five farmers have committed suicide in Madhya Pradesh in the last 15 days.
The Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission has also issued notices to collectors and superintendents of police of all districts of the state regarding rising farmer suicides.
